One of the biggest provinces of Iran is Kerman which is located in the heart of desert and in the south-east of the country. This province includes 7000 historical attractions among which 700 cases are registered in national monuments of Iran. Due to attractions that are in this city, Kerman is considered as the fifth historic city in Iran. The attraction that we are going to talk about in this article of Chiyakotravel is Kerman bazaar-e bozorg which dates back to 600 years ago. This bazaar had constructed in Mozaffari and Teimuri era. In process of formation and developing the city, the first structure of this bazaar has seen many changes. In the following we will describe this monument in more details.

As we mentioned above Kerman Bazaar is more than 600 years old and was built during the reign of Mozaffari and Timurid. Kerman Bazaar, which is also known as Ganjali Khan Bazaar in this city, starts from Arg Square and ends at Moshtaqieh Square. Kerman collections from the Safavid period onward are all related to each other and Kerman Bazaar is one of the most important sections in all these collections. Each part of it was built during the time of one of the rulers of this city and is unique in Iran and has world fame. There are several markets in this bazaar of Kerman each of which is considered as one of the historical monuments of this city.
Walk in all corners of Kerman Bazaar and the markets where it is located, you will encounter a strange feeling and mood. The coppersmith market expresses its antiquity and tradition in this collection. Mozaffari Bazaar shows the most general aspect of the market,  the usual transactions and purchases of people to meet daily needs.

Kerman bazaar-e bozorg is a historical bazaar that starts from Arg Square and extends to Mirza Reza Kermani Street. In fact, this bazaar is a straight line that in the past, there were two entrance and exit gates of the city on both sides of it, namely the gate of Arg, and the gate of mosque.
Kerman Bazaar is known as the largest market in Iran, and by entering it, you will experience a journey through 600 years of history. You will be in a local and attractive atmosphere of the city, and you will have the opportunity to buy goods such as souvenirs and quality handicrafts.
Most of the bazaar was built from the eighth century AH onward during the reign of various rulers. In each part of this market, you will see a different manifestation of Iranian Islamic art and architecture and you will face a different atmosphere. This is one of the most important historical and commercial centers of Kerman and you can see more than 60% of the historical attractions of the city.
It is not bad to know that the name of this valuable heritage, because of these unique architectural features, has been in the list of national heritages of Iran since May 15, 2001, number 3856.

Kerman bazaar-e bozorg, like any other historical and important bazaar, has different parts, each of which is defined based on the occupation of the merchant or the type of architecture, and so on. Before entering into this discussion and explaining the important parts of the Kerman bazaar-e bozorg to you, it is not bad to have a brief look at the structure of traditional Iranian bazaar in general. In general, the main structural elements of the market are:

  • Rasteh or the main and secondary passage of the market which is a long way and shops are located on both sides of it.
  • Sara which is a middle courtyard with interconnected cells around it. The houses differ in the number of floors, the type of porch, and the corridors.
  • Timcheh which are small indoor spaces for the supply of a particular type of product and have significant decorations compared to other market segments.
  • Charsouq or Chaharsoo, which is the intersection of two main rows and has different architecture and detailed interior decorations.

Architecture and bazaar-e bozorg features

As we said, this bazaar dates back to 600 years ago and its architectural style is very rich and valuable. According to many tourism experts and researchers, this market is the largest and longest market in Iran, and in the past, Kerman bazaar has been a place of buying, selling, exporting and importing in this province. Kerman textiles, copper utensils and all kinds of handicrafts are exported to China and India, and spices and fabrics are imported from there.
Above, when we were describing the bazaars, in each of them, buildings such as Vakil Mosque, Ganjali Khan Mosque, Azzakhaneh line, Chehel Sotoun Mosque were built, from each of which you can understand the architecture of their period. . The quadrangles that connect this market to other sub-markets have a beautiful gypsum facade that dates back to 350 to 400 years ago. Over the years, these quadrangles have retained their beautiful oil paintings.

Kerman bazaar-e bozorg has long been a place of trade in textiles, handicrafts and copper ware. Kerman Bazaar-e bozorg is known as the most important distributor of spices in the southeast of Iran. You can find famous cumin of Kerman to Indian Curry in this market. The existence of Sarcheshmeh copper mine in 50 km of Rafsanjan has also made Kerman bazaar blacksmiths have a special reputation. Special souvenirs and sweets of Kerman such as Kolompe can be found in abundance in this market and its Attaran market is also famous for the supply of quality herbal medicines and liqueurs.

Protection of Kerman bazaar-e bozorg

Kerman bazaar-e bozorg is under many dangers such as worn and old electricity system as well as unsafe structures and warehouses. To solve this problem and threat, it is necessary to build canals to transfer power and telecommunication cables, so far three channels have been prepared in the big market and the castle. Unfortunately, due to the cost of renovating this building and preventing the dangers it faces, it requires the participation of the private sector and public sector support. This heritage was registered as one of the national monuments of Iran on May 15, 2001.
