Borujerdi House is located in Kashan city of Isfahan Province. The architecture was done in 1857 by Ustad Ali Maryam, who was a famous architect in Kashan by the order of Seyyed Mehdi Borujerdi, a merchant from Kashan. Borujerdi House was built in 1857 by the same architect who built the exquisite house nearby (Tabatabaei House), for its affluent merchant owner, Seyed Mehdi Natanzi.
Borujerdi House is an example of a wealthy Kashan family residence of the 19th century. outstanding masterpiece of Persian architecture. Borujerdi House is one of the most popular touristic sites of Kashan, along with Tabatabaei House, Ameri House, and Abbasi House.
Story Behind the Borujerdi House
Seyyed Mehdi Borujerdi fell in love with a girl from the affluent Tabatabaei family. The construction of Borujerdi House took 18 years and 150 craftsmen. seven years the construction of Andaruni yard (interior yard) and 11 years the main hall was completed. No wonder it is one of the most incredible houses of not only Kashan but Iran as well.

Owner of Borujerdi House of Kashan, Seyed Mehdi Natanzi a wealthy merchant of Natanz known as Boroujerdi, fell in love with Seyed Jafar Tabatabaei’s daughter (one of the greatest carpet merchants of that time) they were also an affluent family of course. To impress her family, In order to give him his allowance to marry his daughter, he asked Seyed Mehdi Natanzi to build a Borujerdi House, a house similar to his own!
To satisfy the demand of his future bride’s family, the merchant dedicated this house to her, who later became his wife.
Borujerdi House Architect
This brilliant example of Iranian architecture, Borujerdi House was built 130 years ago based on the iranian residential prototype of private (Andaruni) and semi-private (Biruni) parts and summer and winter zones.
The mansion of Borujerdi House consists of three courtyards and three entrances. The large hall is covered adorned with many reliefs, artistic carvings, meshed windows and wall paintings. Borujerdi House is decorated with stucco, glass work, and mirror work, and features frescoes by prominent royal painter Kamal-ol-Molk.
Borujerdi House is located in a hot/arid climatical district of Iran where temperature raise up during the day. But the summer zone is unbelievably cool because of three wind towers, a unique six sided wind catcher dome, the water pool, the two-layer roof, materials, position and several other clever techniques.
The semi-public section of the house is now open to the public as a museum.
Borujerdi House has 3 entrances, and all the classic signatures of traditional Persian residential architecture is included in.
The entrance to the building is in the form of an octagonal vestibule with multilateral skylights in the ceiling. Near the entrance is a five-door chamber with intricate plasterwork. Following a narrow corridor, a vast rectangular courtyard opens up.
The main hall of Borujerdi House is topped with a domed ceiling, decorated with outstanding ornaments. From outside the roof looks like a fairytale castle. The shape of the exterior of Borujerdi House was once compared with buildings, designed by Gaudi in Barcelona. The interior of the house is decorated with Sani Ol Molk paintings and sophisticated carvings of multiple plots.
The courtyard of Borujerdi House has a pool and is flanked by trees and flowerbeds. Near the corridor a reception area is located in between two rooms. Because of the high amount of sunlight these two rooms receive, they were mostly utilized during the cold winter months.East and northeast area of the Borujerdi House property, located the kitchen, rooms and stairways down to the basement. The wind towers made it possible for the basement to consistently benefit from a flow of cool air.
On the southern side of the Borujerdi House a large covered hall adorned with many reliefs, artistic carvings and meshed windows is located which was the main area, where many celebrations were holded. It consists of a raised platform on its far side and would normally by reserved for the more important guests.

Borujerdi House Internationally Recognized
“Persian craftsmen made gold out of dust.” This is what describes the mansion of Borujerdi House and so many other complexes in Iran .While Borujerdi House used to be a private home, it is now open to the public as a museum. The museum is arranged with four sides, for reception, ceremonies, residential halls and rooms.
The Borujerdi House consists of the biruni or exterior part for the public and andaruni or interior part containing private quarters. This feature attributes to many of Iranians traditional residential architecture, including a courtyard with a fountain pool and a two-story iwan (balcony).The main hall is topped by a khishkhan, a type of central dome. Three 40-meter-tall windcatchers, two above the main hall and one over the entrance area, are also erected on the house.
