About Masume Holy Shrine
Masume Holy Shrine located in the Qom province. This shrine belongs to Emam Reza ‘s sister(the eighth Shiite’s prophets. His shrine is in Mashhad). These days this Shrine is famous. Every year lots of visitors and pilgrims visit it. Today, it can also become a major hub for religious tourism around the world, taking advantage of the numerous tourism potentials that can be traced to historical sites, natural tourism attractions, and Islamic and non-Islamic sacred and religious sites. Among the popular religious sites in the city are Masume Holy Shrine or shrine of Hazrat Fatima Masume and the holy mosque of Jamkaran, which, with the presence of tourists and religious tourists, has brought significant foreign exchange revenue to the city’s economy.
About Prophet Fatemeh Masume
The holy shrine of Prophet Fatemeh Masumah, the daughter of Imam Musa Kazem, the sister of Imam Reza and the aunt of Imam Javad, is one of the main goals of the presence of religious tourists in Qom. Base on historical documents and narrations, it seems that one year after the expulsion of Imam Reza by the order of the Abbasid Mamoun in the year 201 AH, Hazrat Masumeh traveled to Khorasan with the hope to visit his brother with some of Relatives nearby.

People’s presence in various cities to welcome her was remarkable at that time. But unfortunately when they were in Saveh they were attacked by a group of enemies in a way that all the men in her group were martyred. Some of the narrations also refer to poisoning the Prophet. After the unfortunate incident, the noble lady fell ill and lost her ability to travel to Khorasan, so she migrated to Qom and stayed at Musaibn Khazraj’s house for seventeen days. Eventually, she deceased without meeting their elder brother.
Masume Holy Shrine history
People in Qom buried her pure body, with special respect and devotion, outside the city and in a place known as the “Garden of Bablan”. After the burial of Lady, “Musaibn Khazraj” placed a canopy over her grave, and later in the year 265 AH, the first dome was built over her precious grave by Imam Javad daughter. The first tile work of the shrine was done during the reign of Al-Muzaffar.
Masume Holy Shrine Architecture
As we mentioned above, lots of non-Muslims tourists like to visit this shrine. The reason is that Masume Holy Shrine is a symbol of Islamic architecture. The most important part of this shrine is its dome. the dome of this shrine changed 3 times during various periods. The last one (the gold one) is related to Qajar era. 200 years ago, Fath Ali Shah Qajar ordered to cover the dome with gold. The point is that some parts of it renewed.
The shrine includes various parts like Haram, Porches, Halls and three yards. the total area of the shrine is about 15000 square meters. This shrine is decorated by different type of arts like tile working, mirror working, plaster art etc. Atabaki courtyard is one of the most beautiful and scenic parts of the holy shrine, consisting of four porches north, south, east and west, each of which leads to a separate entrance. The delicate architecture of each of the porches was carried out by Mirza Ali Asghar Khan at the time of the eight-year process. Adorable art that attracts the attention of every tourist. The process of construction of the newest shrine courtyard, with four entrances known as the courtyard of the time, began from 1381 SH and ended after 3 years. On the walls around the courtyard, you can see Quranic inscriptions of white cement and brick, beautifully decorated with masonry and Kufic lines.
Beauty of the place
The presence of goldsmiths in different parts of the shrine, including two sides of gold porch in the Old courtyard (gilt with the order of “Muhammad Hussein Khan Shahsavan al-Molk” in the year 1295 AH), minarets of the mirror porch and new courtyard minarets(Atabaki court) on arrival being the highest part of the shrine.
Nowadays, due to the extensive work done in repairing, rebuilding and constructing various parts of Masume holy shrine, this heavenly place has a dome, minarets, porches, aisles, pots, and other various areas with a beautiful architecture and a spectacular view of spirituality.
Other attractions in Masume Holy Shrine
Due to the religious points, lots of Muslims tombs locate in this shrine. Among all tombs we can refer to the tombs of 2 kings. Both of these tombs placed in the nice decorated room. The other attraction spots is shrine museum. These days the door of this museum opens to Museum Street. The museum has two floors and it is full of goods and gift belongs to the shrines. In addition you can visit Madrese (religious school). It is close to the shrine and it is one of the oldest schools in Qom. The other attraction is busy bazaar near the shrine. If you enjoy the vivid market you can walk through it and take nice pictures from local people.
